PRP Therapy

In recent years, doctors have learned that the body has the ability to heal itself. Platelet-rich plasma therapy is a treatment that can harness those abilities and enhance the natural growth factors your body uses to heal tissues.

We know this is a 3-step process. Maintenance is required every 4-6 months. When you start your treatment we come to the Gupta Dentofacial Clinic, we do 1 session of PRP therapy every 3-4-weeks.

What is PRP Therapy?

PRP, also known as Platelet Rich Plasma, is a therapy used to treat hair loss consisting of 3 different steps, where we take a patient’s blood sample, use it for processing, and re-inject it into their scalp. Most of us know that PRP injections promote natural growth in the scalp and maintain it by supplying blood to the hair follicles which also helps in tightening the hair shaft.

Sometimes in some cases, these treatments are combined with PRP procedures and medications to get the best results. PRP therapy has been used since the 1980’s and has helped heal hair loss, injured tendons, ligaments, and hair follicles.

What is plasma and what are platelets?

Plasma is the fluid part of the whole blood. It is composed primarily of water and protein and provides a medium for circulating red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets in the body. Platelets, also called thrombocytes, are blood cells that help heal blood clots and other essential growths.

Platelet activation plays an important role in the body’s natural healing process. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses injections of the patient’s own platelets to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints. Thus, PRP injections use each patient’s own treatment system to correct musculoskeletal problems.

PRP injections are made by taking one to a few tubes of your own blood and running it through a centrifuge to concentrate platelets. These activated platelets are then injected directly into your injured or diseased body tissues. It releases growth factors that stimulate and increase the number of reproductive cells in your body.

Ultrasound imaging is sometimes used to guide the injection. The following photographs show PRP injection into the patient’s torn tendon. Ultrasound guidance is shown on the left and injection on the right.

Platelet-rich plasma has been found to significantly increase the healing process, and it is becoming more common to use PRP injections for shoulder pain caused by rotator cuff tears, Achilles tendon rupture, and other soft-tissue injuries.

PRP has also been demonstrated to improve function and reduce pain in people with chronic tendinosis conditions such as tendonitis or tennis elbow or golfer elbow.

Some of the key benefits of PRP injections are that they can reduce the need for strong anti-inflammatory or anti-opioid drugs. In addition, the side effects of PRP injections are very limited because, since the injections are made from your own blood, your body will not reject them or react negatively to them. What is PRP Therapy process?

A specific amount of blood is drawn from your hand which is then collected in a centrifuge [centrifuge – a device that rotates and separates liquids of different densities during this rotating process].

After spinning for 10 min the centrifuge is checked as they form 3 layers:

    • Platelet-Poor Plasma
    • Red Blood Cells
    • Platelet-Rich Plasma
