Your orthodontist will consider surgical orthodontic treatment for patients who have not grown up with improper bites and for those who are concerned about facial beauty. Jaw growth is usually completed between the ages of 16 for girls and 18 for boys. All growth must be completed before jaw surgery. However, pre-surgical tooth movement can begin one to two years before this age.

What is Orthodontics ?

Orthodontic treatment is the process of straightening teeth so that they can look good and function properly.

Orthodontic treatment involves the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities. It is caused by a bad bite. Some common dental problems include overbite, tooth decay, excessive space between teeth and lack of teeth that require orthodontic treatment

How does it work?

During your orthodontic treatment, which usually lasts 6-18 months, you wear braces and visit your orthodontist to adjust the schedule in your braces. As your teeth move with the braces, you will feel that your bite is getting worse instead of better. However, when your jaws are properly aligned during orthognathic surgery, the teeth will fit in their proper position.

Surgery is performed in a hospital with an oral surgeon and can take several hours depending on the size and type of surgery required. In lower jaw surgery, the jaw bone is separated behind the teeth and the holding part is moved forward or backward as needed. In upper jaw surgery, the jaw may be placed forward or backward, or the jaw may be raised or lowered. Separating the jaw by adding / removing bones may be necessary to achieve proper alignment and stability in certain movements. Other facial bones that contribute to alignment can also be replaced or enlarged.

Once you have completed the surgery, you will be able to return to school or work within two weeks. After the required healing time (about 4-8 weeks), your orthodontist will “fine-tune” your bite. In most cases, the braces are removed 6 to 12 months after surgery. After removing your braces, you will put on a retainer to maintain your beautiful new smile.
